Mountain Country

Afghanistan is a dry country in southern Central Asia. Kabul is Afghanistan’s capital city. Mountains cover a large part of the country. The Pamir Mountains rise in the northeast,rift gold and the giant Hindu Kush range spreads across the country from northeast to southwest. Many of Afghanistan’s rivers get their water from the melting snow and glaciers in the mountains. The Kabul River provides water for the fertile valleys and basins around the cities of Kabul and Jalalabad.
Not much of Afghanistan’s land can be used for farming, though. It’s either too rocky or too dry. Only farmers who live in the river valleys where water is available are able to grow crops. They mostly grow wheat, corn, grapes, and rice. Instead of farming, many people raise herds of sheep, goats, cattle, or camels.

For centuries Afghanistan was ruled by a king. It suffered a long civil war in the 1980s when the Soviet Union supported Afghanistan’s communist government. In the 1990s a Muslim group overthrew the government and then fought among themselves.rift gold Finally one group, called the Taliban, took control. They made many strict laws and took away a lot of the Afghan people’s rights. Many people around the world were upset by this.

In 2001 the United States was attacked by terrorists. The U.S. government blamed the terrorism on al-Qaeda, a Muslim group supported by the Taliban. A few weeks later the United States, Britain, and other allies attacked Afghanistan and forced the Taliban from power. The new government restored many of the rights of the Afghan people that the Taliban had taken away.
