Lord Hanningfield convicted over parliamentary expenses

Food and drink suggestions

The major cold period has arrived, which is the last solar term of winter. Professor Chi Xiaoling of the traditional Chinese medical hospital of Guangdong province pointed out that to stay healthy during the coldest time of the year, people need to eat more bitter food and less salty food. The raw or cold food should always be avoided in this period in favor of hot food. However, the hot and dry food should not be eaten too much. She advised that the flavor of the food eatenrift gold at this period can be a little thick and can supply a certain amount of heat.

The following are some food and drink suggestions for people with different body make-ups.

Semen zizyphi spinosae and semen nelumbinis can be good for people to nourish their vitality and blood. Semen nelumbinis, lily and agaric are good for the heart, liver and kidney. Observe A Farmer’s Life

Spring rain makes all the flowers fresh; spring thunder wakes up all hibernating animals. Since the day of the Awakening of Insects, the weather gets warm and the spring plowing begins. Robust young men farm the fields; their wives and kids stay at home preparing their vegetable patch for sowing. Young men work into the evening; still have to drive the cattle to the west for water. They are tired and hungry, but feel good inside when seeing their green seeds soak in the rain. They work day and night with no grain left; they are forced to live in servitude for their whole lives. Looking at this I feel ashamed. I receive an official's salary without doing any farm work.

Linguistics

Although many Americans consider this an abstract field, the study of language and meaning has, in fact, become a center for interdisciplinary interests and discussion. Its reach includes fieldsrift gold of communication and information processing linked to artificial intelligence and computers, questions of cognition and development from psychology and education, questions of meaning and truth from philosophy issues of style and voice in literature and questions of society and culture. In all these, American scholars and thinkers have made important contributions to our understanding of language in general, as well as of its roles within American culture.

Indeed, from the early days of the American nation, scholars confronted questions of what language and identity meant, even if only to establish American standards for lexicon (Noah Webster) or education. Descriptive linguists later confronted the unique linguistic heritage of Native Indian tribes, documenting them in some cases as they disappeared. Anthropologists Edward Sapir and Benjamin Whorf also drew important contrasts between the worldviews embodied in these languages and those of Western Europe. Other approaches stressed function and relation among partera goldts of language, while American linguistics learned from European structural linguistics in the 1930s and 1940s. Noam Chomsky fostered a revolution in American linguistics in the 1950s and 1960s with transformational-generative grammar, which has thrived as both tool and theoretical arena. His stresses on individual effort, mechanisms of production, and grammaticality as accepted speech all evoke themes of American individualism and community. Some critics have argued that his concerns with free will and truth also intersect with his political activism.

China Seeks Outside Help Against Uighur Separatists

China is calling for the international community to help fight what it calls a homegrown terrorist problem in mostly Muslim Xinjiang. The Chinese government accuses the region’s Uighur minority population of seeking independence through violence, while the Uighurs blame Beijing for suppressing their culture and religion. China is already carrying-out counterterrorism-style drills with forces from neighboring countries in Xinjiang.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu says China is among terrorism’s many victims. “Terrorism is the public enemy of the international community. China has always opposed any form of terrorism and actively participates in the international fight against terrorism.”

Social Security Isn't Broke, But We Still Ought to Fix It

It has been a big week in Washington for thrashing out the federal budget, both this year's and those for the future. Along with discussions about slashing spending on such things as defense and Medicare, a growing number of lawmakers are lining up behind plans to cut Social Security, one of the most cherished -- and vital -- programs for the elderly in this country.

Republicans want to increase the retirement age and some Democrats have joined the chorus to cut benefits. Even President Obama, in outlining his budget proposals on Wednesday, indicated that Americans would have to accept "reforms" of Social Security.

"There are those who believe we shouldn't make any reforms to Medicare, TERA Gold Medicaid or Social Security out of a fear that any talk of change to these programs will usher in the sort of radical steps that House Republicans have proposed," Obama said. "I understand these fears. But I guarantee that if we don't make any changes at all, we won't be able to keep our commitments to a retiring generation that will live longer and face higher health care costs than those who came before."

But is the program that has provided retirement benefits to millions of Americans since the Depression really broken? Is it causing the federal deficit to spiral out of control as some have suggested?

The Real Numbers on Social Security

Peter G. Peterson, chairman of Blackstone Group, for example, has repeatedly claimed that Social Security is not adequately funded and that younger Americans will have to pay double the amount of Social Security taxes within 10 years. And even the normally sober factcheck.org, which debunks myths propagated by both parties, has repeated claims that Social Security is contributing to the federal deficit.

The fact is, though, that most of the arguments for why Social Security is facing bankruptcy in the short term are simply not true. RIFT Platinum As Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, says: "The biggest weapon for people who want to change Social Security in a big way, such as privatizing it or seriously cutting benefits, is that the program is on life support." If the program seems like it's going to fade away anyway, people won't feel they have anything to lose by gutting it.

But a close reading of the Trustees report and the Congressional Budget Office analysis paints a different picture. rift gold Social Security received about $37 billion less in payroll taxes than it paid out in benefits in 2010. It will have a larger shortfall again this year because the federal government decided to give workers a 2% tax holiday on the amount they pay toward Social Security in 2011.

But Social Security has a trust fund of $2.6 trillion. This is money that was paid into the system but hasn't yet been spent by it. RIFT Platinum The money is all held in government bonds for which the Treasury must pay interest. It earned $119 billion in interest in 2010 and is projected to receive a similar amount in 2011. Total income in 2010 was $788 billion; total outgo was $706 billion. Does that sound like bankruptcy?

Now, some people regard those interest payments as contributing to the federal deficit. That's correct in in a strictly bookkeeping sense, Rift Gold because the federal government must pay them out of general revenues. But if Social Security didn't own these bonds, someone else would -- perhaps China or a pension fund in California. It is nonsense to suggest they are contributing to the federal deficit, too.

Social Media, Emerging Street Opposition Are Forces Behind Syrian Uprising

For seven weeks a popular uprising against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been raging. Emboldened by successful movements to topple dictators in Tunisia and Egypt, frustrated young Syrians began organizing protests online and then took them to the streets.

Despite periodic cuts in the Internet and mobile network, young Syrian activists have been working their computers and mobile phones for weeks, updating Facebook pages, sending out messages over Twitter, uploading videos onto YouTube rift gold and speaking to human rights campaigners, journalists and others outside their country. They try to tell the world what is happening, as most foreign reporters have been banned.

Activists say tools such as Facebook and Twitter were not widely known in Syria until just a few months ago. As the Arab Spring spread across North Africa and the Middle East, Syrian youth began learning about the role of social media in it. Now thousands engage in social media.
Youth movement
Activist Rami Nakhle, who has been living in Lebanon for the last few months to avoid arrest in his native Syria, rift gold said the uprising began on the Internet with the youth, but then moved to the streets drawing people of all ages.

"It is a completely, completely spontaneous revolution. That's what I would call it.…. but absolutely, it is led by young people. If young people did not call for protest, the old people would just stay in their homes," said Nakhle. "But old people, when they saw protests in the mosque, they will join; when they saw huge protest pass in front of their houses, they will join. It's like this. But who is organizing it? Who is planning it? They are the young people."

Protesters demanded that an oppressive emergency law banning protests be lifted. They also called for the legalization of political parties and the removal of corrupt officials.

At FermiLab, end of Search for 'God Particle' Nears

A twenty-five year search for one of the keys to understanding the structure of the universe is coming to an end at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermilab in suburban Chicago. The Tevatron Accelerator, a sub-atomic particle collider, rift gold is scheduled to go offline later this year. When that happens, the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, in Geneva, Switzerland, will fully take over the search for the so-called "God Particle." But, the Tevatron is not going quietly into retirement.

For more than 15 years, scientist Robert Roser has searched for the elusive "Higgs Boson."

"The Higgs Boson is a hypothetical particle that we believe exists to fix a flaw in the standard mode," said Robert Roser. "The standard model, to us, is our mathematical description of how the universe works. The significant flaw in that model is that it doesn’t explain mass."

The discovery of the Higgs Boson - known to many as the "God Particle" - could give scientists the answers they seek to many of the biggest questions known to man.

"We’re asking the question of how the universe works, and why is it built the way it is built?"

To find the Higgs Boson at Fermilab, scientists use the Tevatron Accelerator to slam protons and anti-protons together. In the stream of data that follows, scientists look for clues that the Higgs Boson exists. So far, they haven’t found any such clues. But Roser says they may have found something else.

"As we look at these huge data sets that we’ve acquired over the 10 years, we’re now putting out things that we’ve learned about that data," he said. "And so what you’re seeing here is evidence for perhaps a new particle rift gold and there will be other things that will come out over the coming months that will be just as interesting as this."

The discovery of what could be a previously unknown sub-atomic particle could also be the last major accomplishment of the Tevatron.

Mountain Country

Afghanistan is a dry country in southern Central Asia. Kabul is Afghanistan’s capital city. Mountains cover a large part of the country. The Pamir Mountains rise in the northeast, rift gold and the giant Hindu Kush range spreads across the country from northeast to southwest. Many of Afghanistan’s rivers get their water from the melting snow and glaciers in the mountains. The Kabul River provides water for the fertile valleys and basins around the cities of Kabul and Jalalabad.
Not much of Afghanistan’s land can be used for farming, though. It’s either too rocky or too dry. Only farmers who live in the river valleys where water is available are able to grow crops. They mostly grow wheat, corn, grapes, and rice. Instead of farming, many people raise herds of sheep, goats, cattle, or camels.

For centuries Afghanistan was ruled by a king. It suffered a long civil war in the 1980s when the Soviet Union supported Afghanistan’s communist government. In the 1990s a Muslim group overthrew the government and then fought among themselves.rift gold Finally one group, called the Taliban, took control. US Says Iran Helping Syria Quell Protests

The U.S. State Department said Thursday it has credible information that Iran is helping the Syrian government quell anti-government protests. Meanwhile a top U.S. diplomat is returning to Bahrain to try to ease a conflict between authorities and protestors there.
rift gold
Iran has at least in public statements, praised protest movements in Arab countries. But officials here say that it is actively helping Syria in efforts to quell persistent demonstrations against the Damascus government.

The State Department comments follow a Wall Street Journal report Thursday quoting U.S. officials as saying that Iran is providing the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad with gear to suppress crowds, and assistance in blocking and monitoring protestors’ use of the Internet, cellphones and text-messaging.

The Iranian government used such tactics to violently put down a local protest movement last year, and the Wall Street Journal said its support for the al-Assad government reflects its concern about the prospect of losing a critical regional ally.

At a news briefing, State Department Acting Deputy Spokesman Mark Toner said while the Iranian government has “obvious problems” with its own human rights record, it continues to play a meddling role in the region.

“We believe that there is credible information that Iran is assisting Syria," said Toner. "I’m not going to get into details about that material assistance, but it’s of real concern to us.”

Toner said if the Syrian government, which has spoken of its interest in reform, is turning to Iran for help, it “can’t be very serious” about it.

As the same time, he called Iran’s encouragement of Arab protest movements, especially in Egypt and Bahrain, “hypocritical” though he said U.S. officials have not seen any indications that Iran is playing an “active role” in helping the mainly-Shiite Bahrain protest movement.

The spokesman said Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman will return to Bahrain next week to try to help bridge the gap between Manama government, a key U.S. ally, and opponents.

Feltman was in Bahrain last month trying to broker talks between the monarchy and protestors when the government launched a violent crackdown.

He was reportedly denied access to key government officials on the eve of the move by security forces, but Toner said the chief U.S. Middle east diplomat is confident he’ll be able to play a constructive role.

“We continue to have conversations with the Bahraini authorities and across the political spectrum in Bahrain," said Toner. "Certainly, we’ve been candid in voicing our concerns about some of these recent actions. But we believe that rift gold there is a peaceful way forward and that that can be achieved.”

Toner said the United States is concerned about Bahrain’s announcement Thursday that it will dissolve the country’s main Shiite opposition group, al-Wefaq, and a smaller faction on grounds that they had tried to bring down constitutional order.

He said the U.S. sees them as “legitimate” political societies that were recognized by the government and said Washington “would welcome” a reversal of the ban.

Pakistan

Pakistan is a country in South Asia. Its neighbor to the east is India. For many years Pakistan and India were a single country known as British India. Pakistan was created to provide a homeland for India’s Muslims. It became an independent country in 1947. Its capital is Islamabad.

Pakistan is a rugged place. In the north are the mountains of the Karakoram Range and the Himalayas. Some of the world’s tallest mountains are part of these ranges. Huge glaciers and roaring rivers cross this landscape. Other parts of the country are very dry. Pakistan’s natural plant life is mainly grass and bushes. But on the slopes of the Himalayas, oak, rift gold, cherry, cedar, and pine trees grow. Brown bears, black Himalayan bears, leopards, and wild sheep are found in the northern mountains. The rare snow leopard is found there too.

Most of Pakistan’s people speak Urdu. But Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, and Balochi are also spoken. Many people can also speak English.

Many Pakistanis are farmers. They grow rice and cotton. Some people make a living from logging and fishing. Others make beautiful carpets and do fine embroidery.

Argentina’s Twice-Founded Capital

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is one of the world’s most important ports and most populous cities. Long ago, rift gold it is said, Spanish sailors named the port Santa María del Buen Aire for their patron saint. The name meant “Saint Mary of the Good Air.”

Buenos Aires was founded twice. The first time was in 1536 by Spanish settlers. They soon left their new home when they were attacked by local Indians. Almost 50 years later Juan de Garay led a larger expedition back to the site. He refounded the city in 1580.

The central section of Buenos Aires still has roads and buildings that were built long ago. The many broad treelined avenues in this part of the city date from the 1920s. These roads continue to carry heavy traffic.

A tour of the city usually includes a visit to the tomb of José de San Martín, the hero of Argentina’s struggle for independence from Spain. Also popular with tourists is La Boca, a pretty section of the city where the first settlers landed. This was later the site of the city’s first meat-salting plants, which made Buenos Aires wealthy in the 1800s. Today La Boca is an artists’ colony known for its brightly painted wooden houses.

Visitors to Buenos Aires also enjoy the city’s museums and theaters. The Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences has a rich collection of fossils.rift gold The National Museum of Fine Arts displays the work of great painters from Argentina and all over the world. OVERVIEW
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), or North Korea, comprises a little more than half of the Korean peninsula. To the west lies the Korea Bay and to the east the Sea of Japan. The northern frontier shares an 880 mi (1,416 km) border with the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and a 12 mi (19 km) border with Russia in the extreme northeastern corner about 75 mi (120 km) southwest of the Russian city of Vladivostok. The terrain is m ountainous, with P aek tu-san (Mount Paektu), an extinct volcano, as the highest point. A demilitarized zone (DMZ) separates North Korea from the Republic of Korea, North Korea’s neighbor to the south on the Korean Peninsula. A series of plains extends along the coasts on either side of the country. North Korea is situated on the Eurasian Tectonic Plate.

MOUNTAINS AND HILLS
Mountains and uplands cover 80 percent of the territory; the proportion is as high as 90 percent in the northern region. The major mountain ranges form a crisscross pattern extending from northwest to southeast and northeast to southwest. The Mach’o˘l Range extends from the vicinity of Paektu-san on the Chinese border in a southeasterly direction toward the east coast. This range has peaks of over 6,500 ft (1,981 m) in altitude. At the summit of Paektu-san, the country’s highest peak, is a crater lake, Cho’onji (Heavenly Lake). Running northeasterly from the center of the Mach’o˘l Range toward the Tumen River valley is the Hamgyo˘ng Range, which also has a number of peaks of over 6,500 ft (1,981 m), including Kwanmo-bon (Mount Kwanmo), 8,334 ft (2,540 m). The southwest extension of the Hamgyo˘ng Range is known as the Pujo˘llyo˘ng Range. Running from north to south and marking the drainage divide for the eastern and western halves of the country is the Nangnim Range, averaging 1,499 m (4,920 ft). To the west of the Nangnim Range are two less prominent ranges, the Myohyang and (in the center of the country) the Puktae, both of which are from 500 to 1,000 m (1,640 to 3,280 ft) in height. Running in a southwestern direction from the Nangnim Range along the Yalu River (which forms the border with China) is the Kangnam Range, the name of which means ‘south of the river.’ Korea’s other major mountain chain, the T’aebaek Range, rises south of Wo˘nsan and extends down the eastern side of the peninsula; it is often called the “backbone of Korea.” Only a short portion of its length is in North Korea, but this section includes the scenic Ku˘mgang-san (“Diamond Mountains”) comprising the heart of North Korea’s largest national park. The granite mountains that rise near the shore of the sea of Japan feature nearly vertical sheer walls, deep canyons, and spectacular waterfalls. The terrain east of the Hamgyo˘ng and Pujo˘llyo˘ng consists of short, parallel ridges that extend from these mountains to the Sea of Japan, creating in effect a series of isolated valleys accessible only by rail lines branching off from the main coastal track . West of the T ’aebaek
Range, the terrain of central Korea is characterized by a series of lesser ranges and hills that gradually level off into plains along the west coast. In some areas where the rock formations are limestone, caves abound. One of the best-known caves is located near Yongbyon on the southern side of the Ch’o˘ngch’o˘n River. Known as T’ongnyonggul, it is about 3 mi ( 5 k m) long, with many chambers, some of which reach widths of 500 ft (150 m) and with ceilings as high as 150 ft (50 m).

Plateaus
To the west of the Hamgyo˘ng and Pujo˘llyo˘ng ranges lies Kaema Plateau, sometimes referred to as the “roof of Korea”. The Kaema Plateau is a heavily forested basaltic tableland with relatively low elevation averaging 3,280 to 4,950 ft (1000 to1,500 m).

INLAND WATERWAYS
Rivers
The major rivers flow in a westerly direction to Korea Bay, the northern extent of the Yellow Sea. The major river is the Yalu, rift gold which f lows f rom Paektu-san to Korea Bay, a distance of almost 500 mi (800 km). Because its course cuts through rocky gorges for much of its length, its alluvial plains are less extensive than its size would suggest. Oceangoing vessels can dock at Sinu˘iju, and small craft can travel upstream as far as Hyesan. Although it is important for transportation and irrigation, the Yalu’s main value lies in its hydroelectric power potential. Dams have been built on the Yalu and four of its tributaries, the Changjin, Ho˘ch’o˘n, Pujo˘n, and Tongno rivers. The Ch’o˘ngch’o˘n River flows in the valley between the Kangnam and the Myohyang Mountain Ranges.

THE COAST, ISLANDS, AND THE OCEAN
Oceans and Seas
Korea Bay off the west coast is shallow and has an unusually great tidal range—from 20 to 40 ft (6 to 12 m). To the east, the coastal waters of the Sea of Japan are very deep, averaging about 5,500 ft (1,676 m).
Major Islands
There are hundreds of small islands off the west coast of North and South Korea. None of the islands under North Korea’s control are notable.
The Coast and Beaches
The west coast along the Korea Bay is highly indented and irregular, and it is studded with a multitude of small offshore islands. A considerable portion of the tidelands have potential value as agricultural land, reed fields, and salt evaporation facilities. Some reclamation has been undertaken in North and South P’yongan provinces. The main port on the west coast is Namp’o, which is located at the mouth of the Taedong River south of So˘joso˘n Bay and is a center for both international and domestic trade.

Further south the coast carves out two more bays, Taedong Bay, which cuts into the coast south of Changsan Cape, and Haeju Bay, which is tucked in away from the larger Kyo˘nggi Bay. In the east, where steep mountains lie close to the coastline along the Sea of Japan, the coastline is relatively smooth, with few islands and only two bays: the large Tongjoso˘n Bay, and the smaller Yo˘nghu˘ng Bay. The coast is washed by both warm and cold currents, contributing to a wide variety of marine life, and causing the coastal region to be frequently shrouded in dense fog.

CLIMATE AND VEGETATION
Temperature
The temperature varies from north to south during winter, with the average January temperature 1°F (-17°C) along the northern border and 18°F (-8°C) at P’yo˘ngyang, the capital. Summer temperatures have less variation from north to south, averaging 70°F (21°C) in the north, and 75°F (24°C) at P’yo˘ngyang.

Rainfall
Approximately 60 percent of the rainfall, 30–40 in (75–100 cm) annually, occurs in June through September. The northernmost regions receive less rainfall, averaging 20 in (50 cm).

Grasslands
The plains regions are important to the nation’s economy, although they constitute only one-fifth of the total area. Most of the plains are alluvial, built up from silt deposited on their b ank s by r ivers in their middle and lower courses. Other plains, such as the P’yo˘ngyang peneplain, were formed by thousands of years of erosion from surrounding hills. A number of plains areas exist on the west coast, including the P’yo˘ngyang peneplain and the Unjon, Anju, Chaeryo˘ng, and Yonbaek plains. Of these, the Chaeryo˘ng and the P’yo˘ngyang are the most extensive, each covering an area of about 200 sq mi (618 sq km). They are followed in size by the Yonbaek Plain, which comprises about 120 sq mi (315 sq km); the rest are about 80 sq km (207 sq km) each. The plains support most of the country’s farmlands, and their small size indicates the severe physical limitations placed on agriculture.
Forests and Jungles
North Korea has an extensive coniferous forest located in its mountainous interior, especially in the north. Species include pine, spruce, fir, and cedar. The lowlands have been deforested for purpose of agricultural cultivation.

HUMAN POPULATION
Like its neighboring country to the south, most of the land in North Korea is mountainous, leaving the popula tion in scattered settlements in the valleys and lowlands. Also like their neighbors in South Korea, North Koreans began migrating to urban areas following World War II. Most of the population resides in the region south of the Kangnam Mountains and west of the Nangnim Mountains, extending as far south as the P’yo˘ngyang municipal district. The least populated region is the mountainous northern region near the border with China. North Korea is not nearly as densely populated as South Korea, with an average population density of about 466 people per sq mi (180 people per sq km). Only seven of its cities have more than 300,000 people, and P’yo˘ngyang alone has more than a million.

NATURAL RESOURCES
Because of the mountainous terrain, much of the country’s natural resources have not yet been fully explored or exploited. Natural resources include coal (along the Taedong River basin in the center of the country), lead, tungsten, zinc, graphite, magnesite, iron ore (centered in the southwestern peninsula region), copper, gold, pyrites, salt, and fluorspar. There is significant hydroelectric power potential, and wind-power generating equipment is installed in the P’yo˘ngyang region.

Palau

The Republic of Palau is a chain of small islands in the western Pacific Ocean. After gaining independence in 1994,rift gold Palau established a temporary capital on Koror Island. In 2006 Palau established a new capital at Melekeok on Babelthuap Island.

Geography
Palau is part of the island group known as Micronesia, which is in the Pacific region called Oceania. Palau includes about 340 small islands. Babelthuap is the largest island. Koror Island is much smaller, but most of the country’s people live there. Raised ridges of coral called coral reefs surround the islands. Palau has a hot climate with heavy rain.

Plants and Animals
Grasslands and rain forests cover Babelthuap Island. Coconut palm trees grow throughout Palau. More than 350 kinds of coral and 1,400 types of fish live in Palau’s waters. The islands’ colorful birds include Palau doves and Palau fantails.

People
Most of the islanders are Palauans. Filipinos and other Asians form the next largest group. Palauan and English are the main languages. Christianity is the main religion.

Economy
Tourism and fishing are important parts of Palau’s economy. Many people work for the government. Others make clothing or crafts. Small farms produce root vegetables and eggs.

History
Palau’s first settlers came from Indonesia, rift gold the Philippines, New Guinea, and other Pacific islands more than 2,000 years ago. Spanish explorers arrived in 1543. In 1899 Spain sold the islands to Germany. Japan seized Palau at the start ofWorldWar I (1914–18). The United States took Palau from Japan duringWorldWar II (1939–45). Palau became an independent country in 1994.

Fructose and Glucose in Foods

Overview
Fructose and glucose are kinds of sugar. You consume them whenever you eat foods containing high fructose corn syrup, table sugar or naturally occurring sugars. TERA Gold You also take in glucose -- though not fructose -- whenever you eat starch. Your cells use fructose and glucose to provide for their energy needs; you can burn the sugars to produce the energy molecule ATP, which fuels muscle movement and other cellular activities.

Sugar Chemistry
Sugars are a subset of the class of nutrient molecules called carbohydrates, which consist of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Starches, found in grains and vegetables like potatoes, are also carbohydrates. All carbohydrates -- sugar and starch -- are made up of one or more sugar units called monosaccharides, chemically bonded together. Carbohydrates consisting of just one or two monosaccharides are sugars and taste sweet. Starches, on the other hand, consist of long chains of bonded monosaccharides, and don't taste sweet. Glucose and fructose are monosaccharides.

Sources of Glucose and Fructose
Some foods contain the monosaccharides glucose or fructose on their own. For instance, glucose and fructose occur naturally in fruit. Plants synthesize the monosaccharides from carbon dioxide and water by using the sun's energy -- this process is called photosynthesis, RIFT Platinum explain Doctors Mary Campbell and Shawn Farrell in their book "Biochemistry." Some foods also contain glucose and fructose chemically bonded together in the form of the sugar sucrose, more commonly called table sugar. Fruit is a natural source of sucrose, but it's also added to many foods as a sweetening agent. Finally, you take in glucose whenever you consume starch.

Digestion
Depending upon the form in which you take in glucose and fructose in your food, you may or may not need to digest the nutrient molecules to absorb them into the bloodstream. Sources of pure glucose and fructose don't need to be digested; you can absorb the monosaccharides directly. If glucose is chemically bonded to fructose -- as in table sugar -- or to other glucose molecules as in starch, you use enzymes to separate the monosaccharides from one another before absorbing them. Dr. Lauralee Sherwood, in her book "Human Physiology," rift gold explains that this process is so rapid that it doesn't significantly slow the rate at which you can absorb the glucose from starch relative to the rate at which you can absorb pure glucose.

Uses
After you absorb glucose and fructose from your food, your cells can take up the monosaccharides and use them for a variety of purposes. RIFT Platinum The major difference between glucose and fructose with regard to cellular uptake is that you need insulin, a hormone from the pancreas, to signal cells to take up glucose. Your cells don't require insulin to take up fructose. Cells can chemically burn glucose or fructose for immediate energy. Rift Gold They can also store fructose or glucose in one of two forms -- as glycogen or as fat. Both storage molecules require chemically reacting glucose and fructose and modifying them into appropriate glycogen or fat precursor molecules.

New York's Tallest Building Is Now One of Its Greenest

New York's tallest and most recognizable skyscraper, the Empire State Building, is perhaps best known as the fictional site of King Kong's last stand. In real life, however, the monkey on the building's back isn't an oversize gorilla -- it's an oversize electricity bill. And the Empire State Building isn't the only structure in the city with a giant appetite for electricity. According to PlaNYC, New York's conservation program, energy consumed by buildings accounts for 75% of the city's total carbon footprint.

A large part of the problem is that New York's buildings, like most of the building stock in America, date back to times when fuel was cheap and energy conservation was almost unknown. While today's green buildings are designed for maximum efficiency, earlier construction was built to take advantage of electricity-guzzling air conditioning, high-powered fans, radiators and other energy-hungry technologies.

Replacing the country's old buildings with new, green architecture would certainly handle the efficiency issue but would also create some problems of its own. As Anthony Malkin, the Empire State Building's owner, notes, green buildings can be expensive to build and maintain, pricing them out of the reach of most clients. Moreover, tearing down existing buildings wastes resources, mitigating the positive effect of any green technology.

The solution, Malkin decided, was to try to find a cost-effective way to slash the Empire State Building's energy consumption.

Bringing a Classic Building Back

In the beginning, Malkin and his father weren't concerned about energy efficiency. When they took control of the Empire State Building in 2006 following a conflict with their partners, the Malkins' main interest was turning around an asset that had become something of an albatross. At the time, the once-proud edifice was showing its age: The lobby's original gold and aluminum Art Deco ceiling had been covered over, the observatory needed a major overhaul and many of the building's hallways, restrooms and offices were out-of-date.

This had had a noticeable effect on the Empire State's renters. As Malkin notes, Rift Gold "We had a large collection of low-quality tenants." In fact, the building's astounding 752 renters were paying, on average, only $26.50 per square foot, a fraction of what more up-to-date buildings in Midtown Manhattan were charging.

"However, history was not enough reason to keep the building. If we were to continue to own it, greatness had to be the destination, not merely ownership."

For much of the first year after they took control, the Malkins considered various ways to return the building to its former glory. RIFT Platinum The first step in getting top-quality renters lay in creating spaces that filled their needs, so Malkin began investigating high-end rental spaces to determine which amenities made the biggest difference to lessees.

It was during that investigation that Malkin discovered that many of the companies that he was hoping to attract were highly concerned about energy costs. rift gold "For renters, the three biggest expenditures are salaries, rent and utilities," he says. "Larger, better tenants demand better energy efficiency."

This is especially true when it comes to international business, he notes. RIFT Platinum "European companies measure their energy usage closely, and many boards set maximums on energy usage." That meant if Malkin wanted to bring the building and its clientele into the 21st century, he needed to massively change its energy profile.

Finding a Green Path

To develop a plan for the update, representatives from the building met with people from the Clinton Climate Initiative and other green-energy groups. TERA Gold While Clinton's team was focused on reducing the building's carbon footprint, the Malkins' concerns were more prosaic: "For us, the bottom line was dollars and cents. We wanted to invest the right amount of money in the right amount of order to maximize profit."
